On behalf of Fairview Parkwood Communities, I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing commitment as we continue to navigate through the evolving dynamics of the pandemic.
For over two years, our team has worked incredibly hard to hold the pandemic at bay, and at each turn they have risen to the challenge.
We are grateful for our partners who have helped us to be successful and maintain excellent care, especially our primary care physicians, who continues to support the clinical leadership team via telephone as well as on-site and hands-on care.
Together, with our partners, have learned about covid-19, how it spreads, and what preventative measures need to be put in place to contain an outbreak.
When the outbreak was declared, our teams were devastated, knowing that residents would need to be isolated and visitors restricted. We appreciate the effects this has on residents, their loved ones and essential caregivers, and this is taken into careful consideration when assessing for the right balance between resident safety, such as risk of spread and quality of life, such as resident engagement with extended family and friends.
A part of that assessment is the knowledge that a person is most infectious 48 hours prior to exhibiting symptoms or testing positive on a rapid antigen test. This critical period can have a significant impact on the home, as exposure is undetected and potentially spread without anyone being aware. Experience has taught us the importance of partnerships and implementing additional measures such as:
- Maintaining consistent communication with our partners at Public Health
- Inviting the Ontario Health Team IPAC Hub into the home to confirm infection control protocols
- Performing continuous administration of rapid and PCR test to establish any spread between residents
- Administering rapid tests to all Essential Caregivers and staff prior to entering the home and having any resident contact
- Reviewing all resident and staff positive cases and contact tracing for each case daily
- Enhanced staffing, to support team members in maintaining quality resident care and individualized, personal support
- Support and hands-on care from the Leadership Team in the home, 7 days a week
Recognizing the impact of the outbreak on team members, measures have been put into place to support our staff on the front line of the outbreak:
- Temporary sick time pay for employees with no remaining sick time to ensure staff who are covid positive have the necessary financial support
- Ensuring there is easy access to all necessary resources and supplies, from PPE to fridges stocked with drinks, freezies and other snacks in impromptu staff rooms
- Additional staff to support extra work necessary during an outbreak
- Leadership team members connect daily with staff who have tested positive to ensure they are supporting and have everything they need
- Working with team members to facilitate return to work
As we continue to focus on keeping residents safe, as President & CEO, I am asking each of you, personally, if you are not feeling well, or may have been exposed, please do not visit your loved one. Please call us so we can support you and ensure proper contact tracing, but do not come to the home.
As we learn more about the omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, we need to recognize the increased transmissibility of the virus and its impacts on our most vulnerable. We must all play our role to keep them safe.
I want to thank our dedicated team, partners including our residents and families, who continue to work with us to keep residents safe. We ask for everyone’s patience as we focus on providing the best care possible.
